Amber Lodge

Amber Lodge pupils attend the unit for varying amounts of time during their mental health assessment.  A typical offer from the lodge is a two-day package, of which they would have two education sessions and two nursing sessions each day.  This would mean they would receive four education sessions per week.  The planning is therefore based on the pupil receiving 4 education sessions per week: - Literacy, Maths, Topic and a Creative lesson.  The Long Term Plan is based on the KS1 and KS2 National Curriculum Requirements and is taught through a different topic each half-term.  The length of stay for children at Amber Lodge varies from as little as 3 months up to a year. A pupil's admission and discharge can be at any point during the academic year so they would receive education based on the topic being delivered at the point of stay.

During their mental health assessment at Amber Lodge, some pupils only attend for half a day or one full day in which case they would receive an equal amount of nursing and education sessions.  In these circumstances the Amber lodge teacher gathers information from the host provision and plans the education sessions based on what the pupil requires at that point in time and in relation to their mental health needs and assessment. It may mean that the pupil could also receive Lego Therapy, Rainbow Group (based on Theraplay principals) or Therapeutic Story Group as one of the education sessions as these are delivered by the education staff.

  • Phonics is not on the Long Term plan as this is taught independently and according to the pupil’s current level, through the systematic synthetic phonics programme ‘Read Write Inc.’
  • Maths Number skills are also not on the Long Term plan as these too, are taught independently and according to the pupil’s current need as advised by the host provision.  For example, if the host school states that the pupil is currently struggling with recalling the number bonds to 10, then this would be a focus until the knowledge is consolidated.
